How does the audience influence your work?

How do you know when it's time to share your work with others? What is your relationship with the ideas of ambition and audience? How does it impact the way you create or how you share?

In today's video, I demonstrate how easy it is to get caught up in thinking too much about audience and the complex feelings that go with it. It can be exciting to share our work with others, to know we've made an impact. It can also be scary to put ourselves out there, to share pieces of ourselves.

I wonder what would happen if I stopped thinking so much about the feelings and focused on seeing my work as seeds. We plant seeds. We water them. We watch them grow. It's simple. It's not complicated by feelings of worth. Maybe if I see my work as seeds, I will be able to let go of judgement and worry.

This week I let go of my overthinking about audience and focus on playing, creating, and sharing like I did as a child: without apology. I invite you to reflect on your relationship with audience. What do you need to unlearn?

Pick a word. For example: “Sensible.” Find a picture of the word, read about the history, and make a list of the number of contexts in which the word appears online in the first five pages of search engine results. And then, play.
