How do you move through your creative work?

Labyrinths have been used around the world since ancient times. A labyrinth combines the spiral and the circle as a tool to following a single, circuitous path to the centre and then out again.

Labyrinths can be metaphors for our life paths, leading us to the centre of ourselves in a walking meditation, and then back out to be with the world.

What conditions are required for us to create? To walk this life path?

In this video I talk about the importance of solitude through the lens of a writer.

To create in my best state of flow I need to be well rested. I need time in a quiet space just to be quiet before I am able to fill the space with ideas. Sometimes it looks like falling asleep. When I wake up, still in that dreamy space, the ideas will rise from the stillness deep within me. Transitions are important. When I allow time to transition from a busy day I can make space for creating.

I’ve learned that this transition needs to be a time for nothing. No electronics. No new adventures. I can walk a familiar route. I can sit in my favourite chair. My goal is to decrease the stimulus around me so I can clearly hear the voice within me. Once I enter into the stillness then I am ready to create.

The goal this week is to pay attention to transitions. How are you moving from your everyday routines to your creative work? What do you need to make this transition go smoothly? How long does it take?

“We shall not cease from our exploration, and at the end of all our exploring, we shall arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”

T.S. Eliot
